Recruitment of New Members
It is a fact that there have been many difficulties in the recruitment of new members, and this is largely because of environmental and societal changes. In South Africa, there are many challenges, such as loadshedding, security and economic reasons. As a result, societies like Freemasonry and other worthy organisations have all been experiencing decline in public interest. For the most part, these challenges cannot be addressed by any association for they are national problems.
However, as Freemasons, we would try to assist wherever possible, for examples organising car pools, assisting in personal problems if needed.
Once we have achieved the task of recruiting new members, it becomes essential to retain them as members and to keep their interest peaked. At Golden Thistle, the aim will be to instantly involve new members in the running of the Lodge. Identifying specific traits and using their talents where they are best suited.
For example, if a brother has talents in marketing, put him in charge of marketing and allowing him to do what he does best, in which task, he may need help, which will always be available. If he is involved in the entertainment industry, make him in charge of a sub-committee, which would be responsible for charity drives as well social gatherings of the brethren of the Lodge and visitors. If he is a good administrator, he will be involved in the administration of the Lodge.
Most importantly, a new member would be educated and trained in the art of Freemasonry on a regular basis, so that our philosophy of self-improvement and growth is better understood. Our emphasis will be teaching the various rituals and their meaning. These rituals form the basis of our philosophy.
